Seek Wisdom
We all want to get better at what we do. I just finished putting on a very informative coaching clinic here in Las Vegas where we presented so much basketball information it caused one young coach to tell me that he “had not even taken that many notes in college!”
My point is not to pat myself on the back, but simply to say that in order for us to really grow, we have to seek wisdom from those who came before us. The best in our game are always seeking older coaches to find out how they became successful. There’s a tremendous amount of wisdom out there that’s not being tapped!
I encourage all coaches to live by this — “seek wisdom from those who came before you”. It’s amazing how much I’ve picked up from older coaches and even coaches who are no longer in the game. They have been there and done that. More importantly, not only have they been there, they have actually been where you may want to go. Seems logical to me that I should talk to those who have been where I want to go. They can save me steps. Even more important, they can show me essential steps I may never have thought of; you can’t buy that wisdom and guidance!
