Never Too Old to Learn
We played the NJ Nets the other night and I spent some time with Del Harris before the game. Talk about a coach who has had a successful career! He’s been to NBA play-offs 27 times, was NBA Coach of the Year in 1995, took Houston to the NBA Finals in 1981, andhas been coaching over 50 years. That is success. That is a career that many of us would love to have.
Having said all that, what struck me the most a statement he made, “I still don’t have a handle on this game.” Here’s a guy who was talking to me about how he learns every day and how he still doesn’t feel like he knows the game the way he wants to know it. He is constantly trying to learn after 50 plus years in the game!
Lesson to all of us: continue our search to learn and improve. It is a characteristic of most every successful coach. Del Harris reminded me of that just the other day!
