Learned the importance of having conviction when it comes to being a leader. This season Doc Rivers made a decision with about 40 games left in our season. He decided that we needed to be as healthy as possible if we had any chance of competing for an NBA title. So he sacrificed wins on occasion for what he thought was best for our team and its chances to win a title — i.e., the health of our team!
While we were going through the last 40 plus games we had everybody from print media to radio shows to the TV people all questioning at some level why we were doing what we were doing. What I learned is that Doc thoroughly thought this strategy out and believed 100% that this is what was best for our team.
His conviction was so strong that our entire team and coaching staff bought in and were 100% committed to making this work. But the major lesson was that he put considerable thought to this before he laid it out. He was even willing to take the shots and the questioning that came with it. This is what true conviction is. And true conviction has to become a part of your leadership.
