As many of you have read about already, Ray Allen set an NBA playoff record this past week. He had a record game, hitting eight 3-pointers in one game. Then in the very next game, he went 0-13 in game 3 of the Celtics/Lakers series. The interesting thing in talking to Ray about how to deal with it is that he believes he must maintain his routine.

If panic rules, then the shooting slump continues. As Ray says, “It’s important that I maintain my routine knowing that my routine does call for me to shoot extra shots when I need to, but I am not going to panic.”

“For me, the next shot is always the most important one.” What he’s saying here is what has made him one of the greatest shooters to ever put on an NBA uniform. He is saying that each shot is a new shot in itself. Each shot requires the fundamentals and focus of a quality shot. Where Ray differs from many players is that he is a stickler for both the fundamentals and the focus in his shooting workouts.

Like all great shooters, he has taken that shot thousands and thousands of times before — that shot, from that spot, at the speed that shot requires! His practice shooting is actually game shooting done in our practice facility!

Hope you give that statement some thought.

Many teams use the “one more” concept on the offensive end when a player has just received a pass and there’s a shooter open in the corner; he should throw “one more” pass to get the wide open shot rather than take the one he has. This is a great ball movement concept as well as a concept that fosters teamwork.

Taken further, this “one more” concept can be applied to almost every aspect of the game and of our work lives. Telling a rebounder to go after “one more.” Telling your team to get “one more stop.” Going through preseason workouts and getting “one more” rep in. The list can go on and on in terms of how important the “one more” concept is.

Competition and game time can do certain things to us that sometimes we’re not even aware of. So often I see coaches (especially assistant coaches) who are so emotionally explosive during games that I often wonder if they have time to actually see what is going on on the floor. They are so wrapped up in the emotions that I wonder what their evaluation level is.

I suggest you give some thought to your own emotion vs. evaluation percentage, especially if you are an assistant coach. The Head Coach gets to choose what he wants to be at game time, but from my perspective, the assistant doesn’t really have a choice. The assistant coach is there to help the Head Coach win the game. He’s not there to be seen — and depending on your head coach, maybe not even to be heard.

An assistant needs to be 90% evaluation and 10% emotion, and in that 10%, I believe 8% should be positive emotion for your team — and zero towards the officials. The remaining 2% has to be used wisely, and not have a negative effect on the game.

Lastly, I would suggest that even Head Coaches analyze their percentages. Are you seeing the game and tracking the game as best you can? Or are you letting emotions steal time way from your evaluation?

I normally won’t do this in a blog post, but after reading this Sports Illustrated article, I think every coach and player needs to read it, too. It’s in SI’s Sports Illustrated article June 22nd edition. The title of the article is “Satisfaction”. It’s an article about the LA Lakers winning the NBA Championship, and a great article for coaches and players to see what the great ones do. I have said many times that the great ones are great for a reason. Check this excerpt from the article talking about Kobe:

“It’s 5:30 in the morning after Game 4. The Lakers have a 3-1 series lead. Bryant is headed to the gym.”

This simple statement says so much. And the article is well worth the cost of the magazine and the time it takes to read about Kobe. The great ones get there because – simply – they are willing and conditioned to do everything it takes to become successful.

No matter what profession you are in, to become great, to become the best, you have to take your preparation to a higher level both physically and mentally!

Read this article and make a copy for your players. Send it to them this summer, as it should motivate them to become even harder workers and deeper thinkers as the summer progresses!
