As you look back on your season and evaluate your games, I’m sure you will find many mistakes — just like we do. But think back on those losses or games you didn’t play well and figure out what your solutions were. Many times we are quick to pull the trigger and try to change something that is actually a part of our core philosophy.
Consider the following three adjustments that could be made based on poor play by your team:
- scheme or strategy
- personnel
- effort
If we polled coaches across the country, they would probably rank these three adjustments differently, based on their team’s system. We feel strongly that our first adjustment is to evaluate effort. Are we playing hard enough? We even have a saying, “let’s take care of hard first.” So when things aren’t going well on the floor, we want to make sure the effort improves before we make a substitution or change in our schemes. We believe so much in our system and our players that we will only look to change personnel and scheme/strategy if our effort isn’t up to the right level.
If you ask our players, they will all tell you that playing with energy and playing hard are a major part of our system and our success. In future posts, I will address how we rank these adjustments and our reasons. In the meantime, I encourage you to put some thought to these adjustments and how you would rank them yourself.
