So many of us viewed last night’s NCAA Championship game and were just amazed at the competitiveness and excitement that surrounded one of the best NCAA Championship Finals games of all time. Now it’s time to pick out some of the many lessons learned.
One of the key things for me dealt with the baseline OB plays. Many might think I’m talking about the actual play that was run. To me, though, the lesson was the importance of the inbounder. It’s critical to put someone in that position that knows all options of the play, can read a defense, and can see things before they happen. It’s these qualities that make up the best inbounders in the game.
John Scheyer seeing that Kyle Singler had a height mismatch was a tremendous read. He had the intelligence to read every position before the count started. This goes without saying how Singler played possum by acting as if nothing was coming his way. Are little things important to winning games at the highest level of play? No question! And the ability to see Brian Zoubek’s man jump out and then have Zoubek slip to the rim for a lay-up was equally as important.
Vision, understanding, feel, and guts are characteristics we all need to find in our inbounders. The inbounder could very well be one of most important evaluations you make about your team!
